Necessity the Mother of Invention

Like the beginnings of many great products Bug in a Rug was born from the old adage that “necessity is the mother of invention”. “I looked everywhere but couldn’t find what I was after”, says the designer and founder of Bug in a Rug, Corinna Herbert, who bemoans the difficulty she had in finding a blanket that stayed on securely around her baby protecting her from the cold weather. “All I could find were the traditional bunny rugs and blankets which left my baby uncovered whenever she wriggled around.
I also had to wrap and re-wrap her every time I moved her from her car seat to her stroller to her carry pouch. As this unsettled baby, it made getting out and about a real chore.”

And so the Bug in a Rug Original Multipurpose Baby Wrap was born - a simple solution for an everyday problem. Made from warm polar fleece, the wrap incorporates a hood to protect baby’s neck, head and ears. It also has enclosed feet to stop toes from poking out and has a unique wrapping action that keeps baby feeling comfortable and secure.

The popularity of Bug in a Rug has grown dramatically since its humble beginning 6 years ago in Corinna’s back yard in Mandurah, Western Australia. The Multipurpose Baby Wraps have captured more than 30% of the newborn baby market in Australia and due to their popularity; the bugs are now sold internationally. The Bug in a Rug range of products is now available in Canada and the USA - you too can experience this practical invention that is taking the world by storm.

Available in several great styles including the original polar fleece winter wrap, the water resistant extreme wrap, the UPF sun protection waffle wrap, and the 100% cotton wrap.

The Bug in a Rug range of products includes the famous wraps and other simple-to-use products that are designed to make life that little bit easier. All Bug in a Rug products are proudly Australian made to stringent quality requirements. You can be confident that your baby will have the best.

Winner of several prestigious business awards in Australia such as the Telstra ‘Young Business Woman of the Year’ and the Australia Post ‘Regional Small Business of the Year’, Corinna’s business success has inspired many people around the world creating a network of innovative mom-run businesses.

It is this last fact that inspired Jane Wood to import the ‘Bugs’ into Canada and the US. As a mother of four, and an accountant by trade, Jane knew a good thing when she saw it.

Jane thought it was the best and most useful baby product available and wanted to be a part of its success. “Whoever said life wasn’t meant to be easy obviously never had a Bug in a Rug Multipurpose Baby Wrap.”

Press Releases

Protect Baby’s Skin the Smart Way Kelowna, B.C., June 24, 2005 New parents want to do the best they can for their children, and during the summer months, that includes protecting delicate baby skin from harmful sun exposure. Saori Forrington, the North American distributor for the Australian-made Bug in a Rug baby wrap, understands. “As a Mom, I recommend the use of the summer wrap for every day,” says Forrington, who first tried the Bug on her daughter two years ago.

“Your baby can be burnt by the sun in so many ways...Since doctors warn against using sunscreen for babies under six months, the protection offered by the Bug is especially important.” In fact, many pediatricians advise staying out of the sun entirely. Infant skin is thinner and more delicate than adults' and older children's. Newborns and infants also burn more easily, since their skin’s sun protection mechanism isn't fully developed. Thankfully, the Bug in a Rug offers a solution for active families. “If you have a Bug, you soon find out how perfect it is. Active parents won’t have to give up boating, hiking, riding bikes, or camping, and the split leg design doesn't limit you like buntings or pouches. I especially like the idea that the baby is fully covered, so the chance of mosquito bites is nil.” First developed in Australia to protect babies from the elements, the Bug in a Rug came to Canada after Forrington tried one herself. The wrap’s practical design and portability convinced her to share the product with other mothers. “I wanted to offer the versatility of this product to Canadians because we have a very similar lifestyle to those in Australia.

The difference is that we are just catching on to the ways we can protect our children’s skin for life.” Given that warnings about West Nile virus and skin cancer are on the rise, and that recent studies have linked the chemicals found in sunscreen to other forms of cancer and immune system deficiency, the Bug in a Rug’s unique system protects baby on all levels. “I am expecting in July and I have my summer wraps ready for this little one. I have a two year old that will not be slowing down. There will not be a day that I won't be exposed to the sun. Between the park, beach, driving, walking, boating, and camping—all of these things we have planned for summer—I will have her in one.”

Her girlfriend sent her a Bug In A Rug wrap from Australia and little Kallan lived in it through winter. Knowing a great thing when she sees one, Saori knew what she had to do. “I kept thinking being in a country like Canada and the United States (the Weather)-Why don’t we have something like this,” she says, “It is so versatile and my daughter really didn’t like to be restricted by the other outfits that she had. She was also extremely interested in sucking her hands looking at them having them free to move about and the wrap allowed her to do so”. Saori contacted the folks down-under and voila an idea takes flight. Distribution across North America began last September and sales continue to grow.

Hudson Bay Companies across Canada and other stores have snapped these gems up due to the fact that parents are looking for warm, practical and innovative outdoor clothing for their pride and joy -30-
